What Is Psychosynthesis Life Coaching?
Psychosynthesis was formulated by Italian psychiatrist Roberto Assagioli, contemporary of Freud and Jung and one of the pioneers of psychoanalysis in Italy, around the turn of the last century. Assagioli recognized that Freud and others had focused almost exclusively on the traumas and drives buried in our subconscious. He felt that contemporary schools didn’t place enough emphasis on the higher aspects of our personality, and maintained that just as there is a lower unconscious, there is also a higher conscious or “superconscious”: a realm of the psyche that contains our highest potential – the Self, our luminous Essence, our inner source of Wisdom and Power. This is where our higher values are found and where peak experiences originate. Assagioli’s insights may be considered the forerunner of Humanistic and Transpersonal Psychology, and his vision of the human psyche codified in the Egg Diagram Map of Psychosynthesis reflected these insights, leading to an inclusive concept of human spiritual evolution and growth. This “three dimensional” view of the psyche provides valuable insights to coaching.
SCA’s international program combines the holistic and transformational approach of Psychosynthesis and its roots in the Vedic Wisdom Traditions as well as a number of other classic and innovative schools of thought within the framework of the Ethics, Guidelines and Core Competencies of the International Coaching Federation (ICF). It enables you to achieve mastery in the coaching process and unleash amazing creative and regenerative power as a result of the reconnection with your inner Source of Wisdom and Power, the Self.
The Self is not an outcome, a place to go or a goal to reach, but already present in ourselves. However, living in a chaotic world bombarded by external stimuli and conditionings, our perception of Self is obscured by the growing noise of our psychic contents. The spiritual orientation of Psychosynthesis combined with the psychosynthesis focus on Will as an essential drive towards wholeness and synthesis gives us the practical tools with which we can learn to govern the inner dynamics associated with the multiplicity inhabiting our psychic realm. Positioning ourselves in the Self and learning to guide others in the same process is the primary objective of Psychosynthesis Life Coach training.
The concept of Will in Psychosynthesis is both unique and powerful. It is a central concept in Psychosynthesis, expressing itself as an inner drive towards coordinating the often conflicting parts of our personalities in a search for self-expression, guiding us towards personal integration. The higher focus of Psychosynthesis is toward ways of being which express our Self, our own uniqueness in the world. The value the Psychosynthesis Will process adds is to coaching is that it is a complete coaching journey involving multiple stages of conceptualization, planning, execution and achievement- all in line with our Essence, our Self. During this process goals brought into session reach more and more clarity, while at the same time the intrinsic values of our client emerge. Purpose, meaning, and values become driven by the Self, not by a need related to a particular subpersonality, bringing lasting satisfaction and well-being for the client.
The outcome of the Psychosynthesis Life Coaching process is one of facilitating the client's actualization of their Self by manifesting Its core values and authenticity, and becoming aware of the actuality of their own inner realm, dynamics, multi-level potentials, and the ontological reality of already being a Self trying to express itself through a personality made up by a multiplicity in chronic conflict, driven by desires to fulfill specific needs and heal old wounds.
This is the core of the Self-Leadership process which is the backbone of SCA’s Psychosynthesis Life Coach Training. The application of this approach to coaching within the framework of the ICF Core Competencies is transformational at a transpersonal level, leading to truly lasting and effective outcomes.
Although he maintained that “the only limitation of Psychosynthesis is that it has no limits”, the culmination of Assagioli’s work was “The Act of Will”, which can be considered one of the first coaching manuals. Psychosynthesis develops and strengthens our ability to define and achieve goals that align with who we truly are, not what we think we want at the moment- leading to effective, harmonious, and lasting results. As Assagioli wrote:
“Psychosynthesis is a method of psychological development and self-realization for those who refuse to remain the slave of their own inner phantasms or of external influences, who refuse to submit passively to the play of psychological forces which is going on within them, and who are determined to become the master of their own lives”.
In essence, to attain “Self-Leadership”.
We are all on a continuous evolutionary path towards the fullest realization of ourselves, but often find ourselves “stuck”. Psychosynthesis helps us to understand why this happens and what to do about it. We become consciously involved in our own evolution, no longer simply reacting to situations using outdated schema, but by becoming Directors of our inner world, recognizing and utilizing our psychological assets in a process of ecological and harmonious personal growth.
We gain “Self-Leadership”
Consistent with Assagioli’s admonition that Psychosynthesis is both inclusive and has no limits, we maintain a continuous program of innovation, rigorously oriented towards the fundamental premise of Psychosynthesis- that of Self-realization. Our program is unique in that it brings a wide range of supporting disciplines to Psychosynthesis Life Coaching, ranging from the neuroscientific foundations of psychosynthesis processes to the Indovedic teachings that underlie most Western psychology and science, positive psychology, ecopsychology. The evolutionary pathway outlined by Psychosynthesis initially involves a personal psychosynthesis, in which we become Directors of our inner world, recognizing the variety of forces available to us and synthesizing them into a harmonious whole when necessary. As American visionary, architect, and poet R. Buckminster Fuller, our family “uncle Bucky”, said around the middle of the last century-
Gaining Self-Leadership
